MARLBOROUGH COLLEGE

Deus Dat Incrementum

God gives the increase

Marlborough College provides an exceptional, contemporary full-boarding education set in a beautiful environment steeped in history. Ambition and scholarship are highly valued, creativity is celebrated, diversity is embraced and each pupil is encouraged to be the best they can be.

There is no “right” path through Marlborough College. Indeed, we celebrate and take pride in the fact that each child’s experience might be different. Pupils who thrive here take responsibility for their own journey, responding to the opportunities available to them.

Founded in 1843, Marlborough College is the UK’s largest co-educational full-boarding school. The College is academically ambitious, offering a progressive, challenging and enriching education both on and off the formal curriculum. Our co-curricular provision is second to none and all pupils become involved in a wide range of sporting and cultural activities. More than 80% of our pupils gain places at Russell Group Universities or Oxbridge, our sports teams regularly reach the latter stages of national competitions, our Symphony Orchestra plays in partnership with the Southbank Sinfonia and our artists exhibit in the Mount House Gallery.

Located in Wiltshire, the College benefits from a 286-acre site, stunning period buildings including a Gothic Revival chapel and the neo-classical Memorial Hall, as well as university-quality sporting facilities. The campus is centred around a 4000 year-old Neolithic Mound.
Marlborough College welcomes pupils from the UK and overseas. We have six girls’ houses, six boys’ houses and four mixed houses of 13-16 year old boys with mixed Sixth Forms of girls and boys. The pastoral care delivered through our 16 boarding houses is unrivalled, ensuring each child is known and cared for individually. Full boarding fosters independence and interdependence. Pupils form friendships for life and develop the social and leadership skills needed to flourish in adult life.

Unique to Marlborough is our professional orchestra-in-partnership programme with the brilliant Southbank Sinfonia.

There are three major productions a year from both a classical and contemporary repertoire. Unique to Marlborough is our TinyByte programme that allows our pupils to create original, short and experimental work which is supported by experts.

INTERESTING FACTS

The school site is based around a 4000 year-old Neolithic Mound, reputedly the burial place of Merlin. In the modern era, the Shell year group are invited to take part in the annual tradition of ‘ad Montem’, which translates as ‘to the Hill’, a ceremony of welcome to mark the start of their time at the College.

We have an internationally renowned observatory which is home to the largest refracting telescope in Wiltshire. It is a key facility for the study of Astronomy by pupils at the College.

The College owns a half-mile stretch of the River Kennet, a chalk stream reowned for its brown trout. Fly-fishing is available as a Lower School option in the Michaelmas and Summer Terms and membership of the Club is open to pupils and staff.

WHAT'S NEW

The state-of-the-art Beko innovation Centre was opened in September 2022. Collaboration and partnership are central to our innovation vision and the building provides a home for our current and future collaborations with partner schools, educational institutions and industry, both locally and globally.

Our ambitious vision for science, technology and innovation also includes the complete refurbishment of the historic Newton Building. Brand new teaching laboratories for science teaching and flexible new learning spaces will revolutionize the way science is taught at Marlborough. Work is due to be completed the end of 2024.
